Hi there, great question! No I definitely did not think I would be doing this as a kid. To be honest I spent half of my time thinking I would somehow magically be spotted for my sporting talent (which didn’t exist!) and have a sports career. I also didn’t think at all about the food I ate as a child apart from whether it was tasty or not! You are far too young even by the time you leave school for most people to know what they want to do. The trick is to work as hard as you can to make sure that you will have options later.
Nope. I was all about being outdoors when I was a kid. I didn’t even know sports nutrition existed!
When I left school I studied science because I loved it and I had a fantastic teacher who really brought science alive and made me want to know more – hopefully you also have a teacher like that who’ll make such a big impact on you.
But I didn’t really know what I wanted to do after I finished University at that point. Some of the most interesting people I know still don’t know what they want to do! (pretty sure that’s from a Baz Lurhmann song, but it’s still true!)
Actually, I kind of did!
I knew I liked science, so I always thought I’d get here eventually.
But plenty of people have no idea what they want to do, until they do it, so don’t stress too much!
Certainly not at primary school. At that stage I was either going to be a medical doctor or play cricket for England! I didn’t think I was going to be a Soil Scientist. I probably didn’t even know that Soil Scientists existed!
Hi TKZ Arcticzzzz, there are LOADS. This isn’t all of them, but off the top of my head:
Sports nutritionist (like me – uses food to make people better at sports)
Sports scientist (uses science of how the body works to make people better at sports)
Astronomer (looks at space)
Astronaut (goes to space)
Ecologist (looks at plants and animals)
Biomedical scientist (do the medical tests at hospitals etc)
Zoologist (looks at animals)
Botanist (looks at plants)
Food scientist (looks at food)
Forensic scientist (fingerprinting etc like C.S.I.)
Meteorologist (makes weather forecasts)
Oceanographer (looks at the seas and oceans)
Paleontologist (does something to do with dinosaurs)
Vet (helps treat ill animals)
Brewer (makes beer – it’s a surprisingly scientific process!)
