Hi there, that’s a tricky question and it could be a long answer if I went through everything!!! Firstly I chose to do a science degree at university but I had to try several things before I settled on working in research as I do now. A very important step I took once I decided to have a career in research was to pick up a short term job as a research assistant in the agriculture department at Newcastle University. This allowed me to make the contacts needed and show I had the skills to get on a funded PhD programme. This was important because I didn’t have the best grades from my degree.
