I did my PhD (when you research something for 3 – 6 years that noone has ever looked at) looking at whether the fish that your mum ate when she was pregnant would affect whether you got asthma or hayfever or other allergies. I think it was only from then that I started realising that we need to start thinking about the fact that fishing has such a big impact on the environment. And after I had my kids I became even more aware of the fact that what my generation do will impact on theirs. Is it something you think about?

      Great question Dylan!

After I did my degree I went to work at a marine conservation organisation in Greece. I lived and worked on a really small island, surveying the marine life by snorkelling and diving – it was great! One of the things we also did was go out with fishermen on their boats, and survey what fish they caught and how big they were. It can seem difficult to find ways to catch fish that don’t cause harm to the environment, but still allow fishermen to make money – I like the challenge of working with fishermen and conservation organisations to come up with compromises that try to suit everyone!
